Love in Music Continues Its Mission Through Online Lessons Amid COVID-19

Issac Jin (bottom), a volunteer at Love in Music’s LA branch, is teaching cello to Emily Hernandez online. Jin has been teaching cello since he was in high school and continues teaching while he was attending UCLA and after graduation. Emily is learning from Jin for three years; she is playing for her high school’s orchestra.

Love in Music has successfully transitioned to online classes with the dedication of young Korean volunteers, ensuring the continuation of its mission despite the pandemic.

Executive Director Gloria Lee stated, “Due to COVID-19, we had to pause our free music lessons for over six months starting in March. However, our young Korean volunteers took the initiative to set up an online learning system, fulfilling the strong desire of our students and their families to continue their music education.”

Since June, Love in Music has been offering virtual music lessons, with 10 volunteers currently teaching violin, cello, and piano to 16 students. However, tuning instruments has been a major challenge in the online format.

“To address this, we have students install tuning apps on their devices, allowing volunteers to guide them and their parents through the tuning process during lessons,” said Lee. “Beyond music education, these lessons also serve as a platform for cultural exchange, as young Korean volunteers regularly engage with children from diverse communities, fostering empathy and cross-cultural understanding.”

Currently, Love in Music has 10 volunteers in the LA area (5 for violin, 2 for cello, and 3 for piano) and is actively seeking additional volunteers for these instruments. In Santa Ana, 33 volunteers teach violin (10), cello (3), clarinet (3), flute (4), trumpet (3), and piano (10). The Gardena location has 5 volunteers, including 4 for violin and 1 for clarinet.
