Kwanghyun Kim (Viola/Support Coordinator) – Los Angeles Branch
North Hollywood High (Class of 2024)
I joined the Los Angeles Branch of Love in Music during the beginning of my junior year. When I first arrived, I felt very lost. I was unfamiliar with how the organization was run and there were so many new people around me. But thankfully, the people of Love in Music were so supportive. The parents, who had previously handled a bunch of responsibilities, helped familiarize me with all my role as support coordinator. I, who was previously a shy person, grew confident as my responsibilities increased. Once I got the hang of things, I started to work to add to the LA branch. Taking inspiration from another branch, I began sending newsletters out with important information. Love in Music was crucial to my development as a more confident person.
After a couple semesters, more people joined the support coordinator team. It became my job to teach them the ropes as the parents did for me. There were rough times, but we made it through. And with their help, I got to focus on why Love in Music was so important. Together, we developed many new ideas like reward systems and an additional music theory class.
Love in Music is a place where anybody can come and thrive. Over the two years I was here, I’ve seen many students improve and volunteers get better at teaching. And I will miss the LA branch dearly, even as I move to new places.
