Hannah Lee (Piano) – South Bay Branch
South High (Class of 2025)
Over the past four years, volunteering at Love in Music has been one of the most enriching and transformative experiences of my life. As one who has played the piano for over a decade, I joined this program hoping simply to share my passion for music. What I didn’t anticipate was how much I would grow—both personally and musically—through the process of teaching others. Teaching piano to students of different ages and backgrounds challenged me in ways I had never experienced before. I learned to adapt my teaching methods to match a variety of learning styles, to be patient and encouraging even when progress was slow, and to communicate complex musical ideas in a way that was simple and accessible.
Seeing my students make progress—whether it was mastering a new scale, reading sheet music, or performing a full piece—brought me a deep sense of joy and fulfillment. Each milestone felt like a shared victory. From the very first moment I touched a piano key as a child, I was captivated by the beauty and complexity of music. I felt that same excitement resurface when one of my first students performed his piece at our winter concert. Watching him walk up, smile nervously, and sit down to play filled me with pride—it felt like I had truly begun the journey of sharing my love for music. That moment, among many others, reminded me why this organization’s mission resonates so deeply with me.
Over time, I’ve accumulated countless memories, from laughing over confusing theory lessons to helping students prepare duets at the last minute for performances. These moments were more than just part of teaching—they were building blocks of community. I also found friendship and inspiration in my fellow volunteers. Being surrounded by like-minded individuals who were equally passionate about music and service made this experience even more meaningful. Together, we supported each other, learned from each other, and celebrated the progress of our students as a team.
I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have been part of this musical community. It has reaffirmed my belief in the power of music to inspire, connect, and heal. Teaching at Love in Music has not only strengthened my technical and interpersonal skills but also deepened my appreciation for the impact that mentorship and music can have on others’ lives. As I look ahead, I carry with me not only the memories of the lessons I taught, but also those I learned—from my students, my peers, and the music itself. I hope that Love in Music will continue to grow and expand, reaching more students who discover their passion through music. I hope that they too, pass on the beauty of that gift to others, just as this organization has encouraged me to do. (Hannah Lee-South Bay)
