Amber Khe (Piano) – South Bay Branch
South High School (Class of 2024)
When I first joined Love in Music, I never anticipated how big of an impact it would have on my life. In the beginning, it was only about fulfilling my duty as a volunteer to earn my hours. However, as I continued to create close relationships and tight bonds with the students, it became something meaningful. I wanted each and every one of my students to succeed, and it was a pleasure seeing their improvement each week. Our South Bay piano group, including both the students and teachers, became one family. Alongside learning music theory and the provided repertoire, we would joke around and talk about our lives outside of piano. The newfound friendships I’ve created through Love in Music are surely ones that have influenced who I am today.
As I watched each student progress in their piano proficiency, I realized how valuable our teaching could be. Music is not only an outlet for expression, but a valuable tool for neurodevelopment. As a product of strenuous piano practice myself, I’ve realized its significance. During a child’s formative years, learning an instrument can highly improve their cognitive skills and memory. No matter how much the students complain about music theory, I push on — motivated by the knowledge that these lessons will benefit them in the long run.
After around 4 years of teaching the piano group of the South Bay branch, it feels bittersweet to say goodbye. I can’t wait to see how our students further their abilities, and I am so proud to see how far they’ve come.
