Boyoon Kim (Piano)

I found Love in Music thanks to a recommendation from my friend who was already volunteering in the community. To be honest, I wasn’t very confident that I would be able to teach someone how to play the piano from scratch. Obviously, understanding how to teach yourself, and being able to teach someone else is a totally different thing. So I couldn’t start teaching immediately when I first joined Love in Music. Instead, I shadowed another teacher until I was fully ready to teach on my own.

As for teaching itself, it was definitely not what I was used to. I needed extra time for me to adjust  into a more leading role. I had to first learn how to communicate with my students better and how to lead up the teaching session on my own. But what I will remember long from my experience at Love in Music are the students. It took a while until I was able to remember my students’ names and a couple students began to recognize me when I walked into the classroom. It was fun to talk to them and it made me so happy with the opportunity to experience such a warm relationship myself. It’s really hard to put my reflections in this short piece of writing, I have gained much more than expected as I have truly enjoyed the whole process of learning how to communicate with my students, how to get along with my peers, and how to serve the community at least with what I can do.
